Meet the parents-Introducing Danielle and Adam, our new non-traditional Mommy and Daddy bloggers!

2010 June 17

[Editor's note: If you haven't noticed, it's Father's Day Week here on Republic of Austin. We're looking for Austin's Coolest Young Dad (Vote!!), and today we're introducing y'all to our new Mommy and Daddy bloggers, Danielle Thomas and Adam Garner. You may remember them from our trip to Marfa last Fall.]

Dani’s Intro:

We’re always teetering on the edge of financial stability but we still live like trust fund kids (we’re not in debt, so put your no-no fingers away). We have a group of incredibly creative friends who have mastered the art of truly owning their lives. We know how to have a good time & I’m pretty sure you or someone you know has had some fun with us.

We’re both self-employed, a little selfish with our charmed lives & live right smack in the heart of the best city on earth.  We take afternoon naps. We’re crazy about each other. We go where we want, when we want. One of the places we haven’t gone yet is down the aisle and…

WE’RE HAVING A BABY!

We’ve decided to blog about our pregnancy & parenting to connect with other non-traditional families in Austin in our quest to try to make sense of it all.

We’re Danielle Thomas & Adam Garner.  Dani owns Big Green House.  She produces events & does marketing consulting for a living (@DaniBigGrnHouse@BigGreenHouse).  Adam owns Trigger Studios. He does motion graphics & shoots film for a living (@adam_garner). We’ve always refused to compromise our happiness & freedom for anything.  We don’t intend to start now.  We do intend to keep going, strap our baby on & teach him/her how to carve his own path.

We don’t have all the answers. In fact, we’ll ask for your input. Actually, feel free to give us your input even if we don’t ask for it… just know that we make fun of judgmental people.

Adam’s Intro:

Danielle and I were best friends for about 5 years before we started dating in late 2008.  Needless to say, we’ve been through a lot together.  We have a unique relationship  with one hell of a foundation built.  We also both own our own businesses and have spent a lot of time building our lives around the simple mantra: “Do what you love.”  That may be exactly how we got pregnant.  That and I have super sperm.

Dani is an amazing woman who plays the role of businesswoman but still sees the world as a kid (Read: She’d rather do paint by numbers or catch lady bugs than hit Neiman’s or pick out new stemware)  Me?  I am more of the grown-up (in most ways), more concerned about starting a 529 Education Plan for college than setting up the nursery.

We have always talked about how fun it would be to have kids-but as more of a dream.  You know the conversation:  “Oh baby, lets have little german-swedish beach babies.  How cute!  I love you, mwah mwah mwah.”  It was always more of an idea-until recently.

When our plans to have little beach babies received a jump start, we looked at each other and thought: “Well, sh*t… I mean, ok, wow, I can’t believe I’m saying this but… let’s DO this!”  I can’t say that everyone should have that reaction, but for us it was pretty natural. I didn’t really tear up until the doctor told us our baby was due in November, and that made it incredibly real.

Men go through a sort of different experience when realizing we’re having a baby.  Your life sort of flashes before your eyes. You think about those long afternoons of sitting around drinking your face off with friends on South Congress and they start to seem like a distant memor- WAIT!

No, we don’t have to forgo our social lives.  We won’t!  We can still have a life!  We MUST.  We’re NOT moving to Round Rock.  We’re fighting the system, and this baby will keep up, not slow us down.  We’re going to do this and have fun.

After we got pregnant, we realized just how many of our friends were pregnant or had kids within the last 12-18 months. Did you guys know that we live in the most beautiful and baby-friendly town in the US?  We’re going to take advantage of that and raise this baby in the city with other unconventional parents, together. That’s, in part, what we want to share with the readers of this blog.

As we started to dig into HOW to have BabyG (as we will now refer to him or her),  we faced a pretty intense research project. Books like “What to Expect” are great but they focus on the physical pregnancy. They don’t really talk about the impact of being pregnant, socially, economically, or spiritually (in the non-religious sense). That’s what we’re going to try to explore as we, a non-traditional couple having a baby, blog. And we want you to be a part of it.

It’s baby, freestyle.

So, so, so well put! Extremely happy for you two. This baby is going to be one hell of a kiddo.
