Wait, Red Bull wants me to choose the Best DJ in Texas?

Y’all know I’m an avid fan of electronic music. And if you’ve read my bio, then you also know I that a was a raver as a kid. So when I got an email from the folks over at Red Bull asking if I’d judge a DJ event, I got super excited.

Well tonight’s the night I head down to San Antonio for the Tex Mix. I’ll be one of five judges choosing the Best Texas DJ out of 6, including DJ’s from Austin, San Antonio and Houston (Sorry, Dallas).

I’m kind of intrigued by the other judges. There’s a good smattering of musical tastes:

Danny Perez - Cowboy’s Dance Halls (Large honk ytonks in Dallas, SA and Houston-kinda like Austin’s Midnight Rodeo)
Jeremiah Wedgworth - Partner, Nox Nightclub, Kobain, Taps, Republika and Diem (A whole bunch of different types of clubs in Houston)
Christopher Lynn - Editor, Republic of Austin (me, d’uh)
DJ Joe Vega - Winner of Red Bull Thre3Style Dallas
George Hill - Point Guard, San Antonio Spurs

And the DJ’s:

DJ M (San Antonio)
DJ Scuba Steve (San Antonio)
DJ Manny (Austin)
DJ Bigface (Austin)
DJ Kyle Berg (Houston)
DJ Kung Fu Pimp (Houston)

What am I judging?

The judges will assign a score based on creativity, stage presence, song selection, audience response, technical skills and overall performance. Remember, the DJs must include a minimum of 3 Texas Songs (either written by a Texan or mentioning Texas) to qualify. This is very similar to Red Bull Thre3 style, so we’re really looking for a DJ that rocks the party!

Man, that’s a lot to judge. Should I be a Simon (snarky), a Randy (you did great, dog) or a Paula (incoherent babbling and smiling)?
