When I first heard about the Musical Kaleidoscope Project created by Austin’s own Erin Ivey, it sounded like an old-time carnival with attractions for everyone. Showcasing Erin’s latest music and joined by multiple singers, two bands, a tap dancer, a trumpet player, a slam poet, aerial dancers, a cellist and an mbira player, how could we get bored? Well, the show did not disappoint.

Based on Erin’s interest in the interdisciplinary arts and inspired by Arsene Dupin, she created a show chock full of artists willing to take their talent and present it in a new way. As she performed her latest songs, the other artists weaved in and out of the show, creating a multi-faceted production. For example, while Erin sang her haunting ballad “All in Time,” aerial dancers Blue Lapis Light, suspended by just two pieces of cloth hanging from the ceiling, created a sensual dance above the stage.

The intimate setting in the Rollins Studio Theatre at the Long Center was perfect for Erin’s creation. We got a taste of so many Austin talents but most delightfully, we enjoyed Erin’s sweet and sultry version of Texas folk music. We’ve got our fingers crossed that this becomes an annual event!
