Jennifer Ross - Icing on the Cupcake

Chris chats it up with Austin novelist Jennifer Ross, author of 'Icing on the Cupcake.'

If you’ve ever been around me when I’ve had any sugar-let’s say a cupcake-then you know that once I bite, I 1) can’t stop and 2) get borderline stupid (Watch this video of me at Sugar Mama’s Pie Eating Contest and see for yourself).  Like a zombie going for brains, I want to devour every sweet thing in sight until I come crashing down with a tummy ache.

Seriously, the last time I was at Hey Cupcake!, I ate three WHIP CREAM filled cupcakes-and I would have eaten a fourth, had my cousin not intervened. Ever since that incident, I have severely limited my sugar intake. I also don’t put myself in situations that put me in contact with cupcakes.

That all changed when I met Jennifer Ross.

Jennifer is an Austin novelist who just published “The Icing on the Cupcake,” a novel that, well, involves cupcakes. It’s about a Southern girl who gets dumped by her fiancé, moves to New York to live with her grandmother, and learns how to bake out her sorrow in cupcakes. Each chapter ends in a recipe, and Jennifer assures me it’s not traditional chick-lit.

Risking my better judgement, I decided I’d invite Jennifer to a cupcake party. Choosing cupcakes from Hey Cupcake!, Delish Bakery and Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, I thought I’d trick her by smashing the cupcakes. Alas, she was too smart for me.

Watch the video, below, to find out which of the three Jennifer names “The Best Cupcake in Austin.” Do you agree with her? What’s your favorite cupcake place in Austin?

I have to say that I think Sugar Mama’s has the best cupcake in town. I agree the cake doesn’t always seem as moist, but it’s obviously the butter/oil thing and I would prefer butter in my cake. Plus, they have the best flavors in town.

Delish is really good. However, I have watched their cupcakes evolve since they opened and while I don’t mind that they have shrunk in size (they are now just right instead of being ginormous), it seemed like they changed the ingredients. The Mexican Vanilla used to be my favorite cupcake in town, period. Then they did something so it’s not as Mexican Vanilla-y as it used to be. I even remember seeing vanilla specks in the frosting that are no longer there. Had one recently and it is tasty, just not the best.

Hey Cupcake is blah. It honestly tastes like a box mix to me and it’s just pure sugar with very little variety and flavor.

Yeah Jennifer Ross! You have good taste in cupcakes! Will definitely have to check out your book.
