Austin jewelry designer Catherine Nicole combines bright colors and vintage chains to create timeless statement pieces.

2010 July 14

After seeing that the Austin Fashion Week tickets went on sale this week, I was super excited to talk to Austin jewelry designer Catherine Nicole. One of the winning designers from last year’s fashion week, she specializes in rich, handmade jewelery with warm bright colors and interesting textiles.

Catherine took Austin by storm with her signature jewelry to win the 2009 Austin Fashion Week Best Overall Designer for the People’s Choice category-quite an impressive feat for a first timer in Austin.

Set-up in her home studio

Much like RoA blogger Rachel’s recent European adventure, Catherine’s inspiration behind her collection comes from her travels to exotic places. Catherine also lived in Spain for seven years. In fact, it was while she was in Spain that she fell in love with the bold, colorful, natural stones and chunky golds that have become staples in some of her most popular pieces.

After graduating from Parson’s School of Design, Catharine found a permanent direction into jewelry and opened her own boutique in Georgia. Soon after, she decided to take her operations on the road…airstream trailer style.  For a year, she traveled all over the country, meeting buyers and camping out. One such stop? The beautiful Austin, Texas where she and her husband finally decided to put permanent roots - she’s been thriving among the Austin design community ever since.

I love the sharp metals and standout bold colors that turn an ordinary outfit into something unique. I also love how she incorporates the old with new, using vintage Chanel chains as the backdrop to many of her designs, giving her pieces a unique and timeless touch.

One of my favorite pieces!

With the beautiful necklace, above, I could totally pair a plain tank top with some jeans and this jewel to easily create a fun, going-out look.

Loved getting a behind the scenes look at how Catherine makes her jewelry

You can find Catherine’s pieces at several boutiques around the city, including Beyond Tradition, Blue Elephant, Luxe Apothetique, Mana Culture, Capra & Cavelli and Solid Gold. Or shop online at her website.

All orders are custom made, which is super nice since it gives you some freedom with her great pieces

As Fashion Week approaches, check RoA for more introductions to Austin-based designers, models and boutiques.  I want to hear who you guys are most excited about seeing!
