4 simple tips to make 2010 the greenest SXSW ever!

What makes SXSW the best conference ever?  Too many reasons to count obviously, but I happen to love that they have been carbon neutral since 2006 and they continue to search for more way to offset their carbon footprint.  So while the great people at SX are definitely doing their part, here’s how you can do yours.

Going green at SXSW 2010

  1. Online Planning: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Bill’s Map to plot out my day.  It let’s you map, schedule AND sample music on the same site.  Don’t print out your schedule, access it all from your smart phone.
  2. Hike and Bike the City: Walk or ride your bike to get around.  I highly recommend biking simply because it’s ten times more fun.  You can make a rental reservation at Bicycle Sport Shop or buy one off Craigslist for less than $100 and give to a person in need when you’re done with your visit.
    • For those of you who are new to the city and want to ride, the key is to have confidence.  I know it can be scary riding with cars, but it’s so much more fun than driving!  Remember, to keep in your bike lane, and when there is no bike lane, keep to the margins of the road.  Relax, and don’t feel pressured by traffic.  You own these streets.
  3. Eat locally:  If your food didn’t have to travel to get to your dinner plate, then your big footprint just got a bit smaller.  P.Terry’s and Blue Dahlia offer great locally grown food, and so many restaurants like La Condesa will offer a menu item that uses local foods picked that same day!  Use dinegreen.com to find a green restaurant near you.
  4. Pedicabs!!! Take a pedi cab over a taxi cab.  They’re easier to catch, and at events like these, they can maneuver through traffic better than the taxi’s can.  Plus, Austin boys are so fit, so don’t underestimate their speed.
