What are these gorillas doing on the Lance Armstrong Bikeway? [STREET ART]
Have you cycled the Lance Armstrong Bikeway yet? It’s my favorite East-West route in the city. The I-35 underpass, to me, is kinda like the gateway to the splendor that is the East Side. And now, there’s more to see than just a bunch of crackheads and broken glass. Check out these giant gorilla cutouts I stumbled upon this weekend:
This one in heading east right before going under I-35. It’s like he’s welcoming you to the magical land that is east of the freeway.
This little guy is on the bikeway heading west before the I-35 underpass. Looks like he’s lost his arms and his legs. Sux! Maybe it symbolizes the racial oppression (or ‘losing of one’s limbs’) in Austin once institutionalized by the erection of the freeway. Or MAYBE I finally got to use my college education in a post!
Both gorillas are chained to street signs, so they might be something the city put up. They’re a little more exciting to me than the official art unveiled along the Lance Armstrong Bikeway earlier this summer. Official or no, they’re pretty bomb. Mad love to whomever made these bad boys. You just brightened my daily ride to the East Side!
