Lake Travis Water Level on Feb 11 2010As a bicyclist, there’s nothing I love more than torrential rain.  You know the kind: The steady rain that has been falling non-stop for the last month. Yeah, there’s nothing like showing up to a meeting with mud sprayed up my back and my jeans soaked through to my underwear and stuck to my legs. And when you add 30 degree temperatures, that 12-minute bike ride downtown is like heaven.

Ok, who am I kidding? I EFFING HATE this weather. When I look outside my window and see the rain, I just want to crawl back under the covers–especially if I check the temp on my iPhone and it’s anything below 50.  There’s a reason I don’t live in Portland, and it’s not because I can’t stand Patchouli.

I’m ready for Lake Season. I can’t wait for a summertime cookouts. My heart yearns for late night swims at Barton Springs.  But we gotta get through rainy season first.

green belt

Yeah, I'm reusing Ari's pic of the Greenbelt--but check out those white caps!!

And at least this year we have a rainy season. Last year’s drought left the Greenbelt bone dry. Lake Travis looked more like a pond.  So as much as I HATE this weather, I effing love the fact that all this rain has us just 8 feet below full. And the Greenbelt has white caps. I haven’t seen that since, um, 2002!

So when you’re sitting on MOPAC/I-35/Lamar/360 in traffic because no one in Austin knows how to drive in the rain, or when you decide to make it a Netflix night instead of going out, just remember that all this rain is gonna make the spring and summer months even that much more awesome.

That is why, dear readers, I love torrential rain.

After last summer’s near repeat of 1925 (69 days of 100+ degrees, or so I’ve heard), I never thought we’d break below 70 ever again, let alone revert to this PNW style weather.

Seriously – one of these winters, I’m going to have to buy a coat.
