“Locally Thrown: Interview with DJ Manny and Austin Punk Rock Band the Riverboat Gamblers”

In most facets of life, like food, restaurants and shopping, we Austinites seem to be pretty independent and support local businesses over the big box chains. But how many times do you actually hear Austin bands when you go out to a bar or club? Approximately zero point zero five percent of the time.

People get so up in arms about keeping Austin Austin, so why can’t our favorite up-and-coming Austin artists got spun by our local DJs? That’s the concept behind Red Bull Locally Thrown, an event that brings some of Austin’s top DJs together with some of our favorite local bands.

For the party, six Austin DJs with different musical styles (DJ Manny, DJ Orion, PREPMODE, DJ BigFace, Richard Gear & DJ JE) will be remixing ten Austin bands from very diverse musical genres (The Octopus Project, Riverboat Gamblers, LIONS, The Black & White Years, White Ghost Shivers, Nelo, The Lemurs, Brothers & Sisters, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and The Story Of). But the event isn’t just about shakin your azz, the suggested cover charge goes to a good cause.

Recently, the Riverboat Gamblers’ guitarist, Ian MacDougal, was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.  He was seriously injured and has been in the hospital ever since.  Proceeds from the $5 suggested donation at the door will help alleviate some of Ian’s medical expenses.

Solid DJ lineup, kick-a local bands AND helping an Ausin musician in need? Count me in!
