I’ll just put it out there: I’m not a KGSR listener. Their music is too light for me, and I don’t drive a car. I do, however, respect what they do for the Austin music scene. Their “Unplugged at the Grove” series on Thursday nights at Shady Grove and their concerts in Republic Square park are summertime staples that have made it one of Austin’s most beloved stations.

Imagine my surprise when I logged into my Facebook account yesterday to discover the white-bread station was embroiled in controversy. Nope, the station manager wasn’t tagged in inappropriate photos. Instead, Facebook suggested I become friends with “Say Goodbye to KGSR.”

My first thought was: “Oh snap, KGSR is going off the air! What will the waitstaff at Shady Grove do on Thursday nights?” But then I took a deep breath and clicked around the profile.  It turns out, KGSR is not going anywhere; they’ve watered down their programming and a lot of people aren’t very happy. After a couple of emails with peeps in the Austin radio industry, I got the skinny, and surprise, it all boils down to ratings.

Austin radio ratings are about to change.

A company called Arbitron determines the ratings. Since the dawn of time, people in Arbitron’s sample have kept journals chronicling the stations they listen to throughout the day. Arbitron then tallies the information and determines the ratings.

Last year, Arbitron began rolling out a device called a Portable People Meter, a kind of pager-like device that listens for digital signatures embedded in broadcasts.  Since the PPM is always on, it tracks what people are actually listening to. It turns out that people who previously filled the full day with one station actually channel surf.

Austin gets PPMs later this year. Because they’ve seen how the new ratings affect other cities, KGSR is watering down their programing by cutting local music and adding more pulp in an effort to attract those channel surfers. In so doing, they’ve also alienated a chunk of their fan base. In fact, another Facebook fan page called “I want the old KGSR back…NOW!!!!!” has more fans than either the official KGSR Page or the fan page for KGSR’s Local Music Show Lone Star State of Mind.

Why KGSR’s change pisses me off.

Couple of things about the KGSR format change piss me off. First off, appealing to the lowest common denominator as marketing strategy doesn’t always work.  A better strategy: Differentiation and innovation.

The second problem is indicative of a larger problem in Austin radio: For a city that prides itself as being the Live Music Capital of the World, the radio stations do next to nothing to support Austin bands and musicians. Back in the early days of radio, local stations would break local artists: Think Elvis in Memphis, the Motown artists on Detroit radio stations, or even Biggie on New Yorks’s Hot 97. If our own radio stations don’t play local artists, how can we expect them to ever break outside of Austin?

Can Austin radio be saved?

Maybe KGSR’s move from bland to blander will open the doorway for other radio stations to stand out.  KUT 90.5 has been increasing their play and coverage of Austin musicians. Maybe pissed off KGSR listeners will flock there. Or maybe MIX 94.7 will dominate the adult contemporary space by increasing their local music selections and adding a little edgier content, like this Internet station they launched last week that streams a selection of SXSW picks.

And 101x: I love you. I grew up with you, but PLAY MORE LOCAL MUSIC!! That would truly be alternative.

Laughing with Glynn Wedgewood from Austin Brit-rock band STEREO IS A LIE.

Funny as it may sound, Austin has our own Brit-rock band. Their name is STEREO IS A LIE, and they’re legit. One listen to frontman Glynn Wedgewood’s accent in the video, below, and you’ll know it’s true.

STEREO IS A LIE is loud and they rock, so it’s easy to compare them to Muse–but I wouldn’t say that’s accurate. To me, they’re more closely related to the 90’s alternative British pop scene, kinda like if Damon Albarn from Blur grew a pair, or if Noel Gallagher from Oasis stopped whining AND grew two pairs. And I dare you to go to one of their shows and try to leave with your hearing still in tact.

For the last 7 months, STEREO IS A LIE has been in and out of the studio working on their first album. They finish laying the tracks this week and then send it off to Chris Cline for mixing. Chris has done a great job at reigning in stage rockers Trail of Dead, so it will be interesting to see how well he can translate STEREO IS A LIE’s stage show in the studio.

Although I’ve only heard one track off the album [Scroll down for a listen!], I like what I’ve heard. More mature, it’s filled with more subtle layers than a rocking stage show will allow. I can’t wait to hear the full album!

Hands down, Fader Fort wins best party during SXSW. But for me, the best lineup is always the Perez Hilton Party. And while I may not agree with celeb chasing, I’ve gotta give the dude mad props for his music selection.

I won’t lie: Last year got a little messy. I scammed my way in by using a printout of my roommates RSVP, met up with my folks, and made a beeline to the adult bevskis. Whether it was the abundance of free beer or the rivers of free vodka, my boys and I got crunk quickly, and proceed to dance around and scream things like:” ‘04 represent” and “SoCo in da house.”

It was a lot of fun, but the music, man, the music: Yelle, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Little Boots, Ladyhawke, Kid Cudi, Solange and SURPRISE guest: Kanye West. After the show ended at 2A, we bounced over to the hotel pool next door, stripped and had rowdy relay races until we got kicked out.

I don’t know if it’s possible to top Kanye West, but I know Perez has it in him. Since the line-up hasn’t been announced yet, we’re mixing a little rumor with a little educated guessing to give you our  lineup for the Perez Hilton party:

• Lady Gaga –> This has been the biggest rumor. Not surprising, they’re are besties and she’s on the top of the world right now
• Courtney Love –> Hole’s big US comeback is happening at the SPIN party during SXSW, so…
• Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings –> Amy Winehouse has been replaced.
• M.I.A. –> He always dogs her, but she’s got a new album coming out, and it would be a huge surprise. Diplo’s in town…
• Wale –> Wale is the hip-hop darling right now. He also has done a couple tracks with Lady Gaga.
• Uffie –> potty-mouthed electro princess, she’s gonna be at SXSW and she has a new album.
• Amanda Blank –> See Uffie, except not at SXSW BUT she doesn’t have anything booked
• Nicki Minaj –> The new Foxy Brown or Little Kim. She’s bisexual and Perez loves controversy
• JJ –> dreamy electro about drugs. They aren’t booked during SXSW, but they are touring with the XX, who are ALL over SXSW
• And I’m tapped out…

Donning raver apparel, Chris gets ready for a tour of the new Austin City Limits Studio construction site.

Like a pubescent teenage boy, Austin has had quite a few high-rises popping up lately. The newest–and the last for a while–to grace the skyline is the W Austin Residencies. With its glass paneling and clean lines, it is, by far, the sexiest erection yet. But the W is only one piece of the entire development project known as Block 21. And while the W will compliment the city’s beauty, the other major piece of Block 21, the new Austin City Limits Studio, will enhance the city’s soul.

Yup, after 30 years hidden on the UT Campus, the beloved television show is moving to new digs in the chic 2nd Street District. A couple of weeks ago, we got a private tour of the construction site and a preview of the new studio. For the record: The new Austin City Limits studio is gonna be FUTURE!

Befitting its recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Landmark status, the show’s new venue comes complete with a grandiose master staircase, private box suites and a big shiny sign. More importantly, the acoustics have been expertly engineered, and the venue will have a much higher capacity, easier wheelchair and bathroom access, and B-A-R-S! Even with a larger capacity, however, the new studio will still remain intimate: NO views are obstructed, and the farthest seat is only 60 feet from the stage. In fact, standing where the stage will be, the open, compact design reminded of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Austin City Limits will begin shooting in February 2011. When not being used by KLRU, the studio will be an official Live Nation concert venue, helping the city got larger acts that might not want to play in the not-designed-for-concerts Erwin Center.

Two months ago I set some pretty lofty New Year’s Resolutions:

• Not to use my credit cards and not to get further into debt
• Not to buy any clothes, shoes or handbags for an entire year
• Not to make a single purchase over $100

I would say the hardest one to keep has been to not use credit cards.  It hasn’t been hard because I’ve been wanting to buy anything major or go on vacation or some other kind of frivolous expense.  It’s been because I’ve actual began realizing how far outside our means we’ve been living.  Just paying our monthly bills has been challenging, and I’ve had to dig into some savings accounts that I’ve been stockpiling for several years just to get by.

This month has been especially challenging due to a fun-filled weekend at the beginning of the month that left us strapped for cash the rest of the month.  Here’s some strategies that got us by:

1. Automatic savings — Every two weeks on pay day, I have an automatic transfer of $50 from our checking into our savings account.  It’s only $50, but the gradual accumulation over just a few months has really come in handy during a pinch.
2. Renegotiate utilities — We called Directv to see if they could give us a new rate, and they did!  We cut that bill down by about $30 each month, and we got 3 months of Starz free!
3. Pay yourself weekly — I only get paid once a month, and my husband gets paid twice a month.  We divide up those paychecks into weekly allowances so we don’t find ourselves outstretched by the end of the month.

Nothing breaks my heart more than hatred and violence. And I can’t stand to see it present in our city.

Growing up, I lived just outside of Dallas in Euless, a town full of diversity, known particularly for having a large Tongan population (If you follow High School football, then you might be familiar with the Trinity Trojans). Because I’d always had friends who were black, white and brown, I lived in a semi-idyllic world, thinking that racial violence was a thing for past generations. That all changed in Junior High.

One morning in the school cafeteria, a crazy, cowboy white dude decided to put on some razor-brass knuckles and go punch a black football player named Bubba in the belly. Flesh is flesh, no matter what color, and those razors did a number on Bubba’s insides. He spent many weeks in the hospital recovering.

Bubba was pretty much beloved by everyone. My family and friends visited Bubba in the hospital. And our school organized a giant rally against hate to show that this was NOT something we would stand for in our community.

Well, ladies and gentleman, Austin has had our cafeteria moment. Last week, two gay men got followed from the bars on 4th St to the Parking Garage at City Hall and then were jumped by four dudes. Here’s a shocking account from Emmanuel Winston, one of the guys who was assaulted:

I’m writing to you to tell you about the experience my friend and I had this weekend. We were leaving a popular gay bar, Oilcan Harry’s, at around 2:30am late Friday night, early Saturday morning. We had just come from celebrating Jersey Night for the opening weekend of the spring softball season for gay Austin softball league. Both my friend and I were wearing our team jersey’s.

We were followed from the outside of the bar to three blocks down to the City Hall parking garage and attacked from behind by four men. The nature of the crime was based out of cowardice. The first unexpected blow was a punch to the back of my head. Attacking us from behind left us disoriented and unable to quickly react. At one point there were three men on me, kicking and punching my face. I don’t think these men expected us to fight back like we did, but my friend and I are fairly athletic men. When we were able to get the men of us and face them that is when one of the men called out to us calling us fags. They ran away, we tried to follow, but we lost them. I sustained contusions and lacerations to the face. My friend thought he had broken his nose.

I have never in my life experienced anything like this. The fact that I had been a target of a hate crime simply because of my sexual orientation had me shocked. We filed a report with the Austin Police Department and are waiting to see if the men can be identified, caught, and prosecuted.

The reason why I’m writing to you is because this needs to change. We live in 2010 and yet are still plagued with the ignorance and fear of others. A clear message needs to be sent that this is not o.k. I’ve been overwhelmed with the stories of other men and women who have also been targets of hate crime violence and at the time didn’t have the platform to speak. I am speaking out in behalf of future generations of gay men and women and hope that they never have to go through an experience like mine.

This is Austin. And in OUR Austin, this is NOT acceptable. We need to send a message to those punks that this is not acceptable. We need to send a message to City Hall that this is not acceptable. And we need them to show the world that the City of Austin and the Police force will do whatever it takes to bring justice.

Join me in showing the world that Austin will not be known as a city of violent hatred and intolerance. Take a stand and march against hate this Saturday, February 27th, 2010. Share the Facebook Events with your friends. Let’s stand together and show that this is not the Austin we want.

Ok, ok. So this post is a tad self-promotional, but we thought y’all would like a sneak peak at what we’ve got planned for tonight’s Roaries Award Show.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve worked with many of the nominees to film really intimate performances at various places around the city–and two nominees on tour made their own videos. We’ll be premiering thesm TONIGHT at the Parish during the Awards Ceremony. Don’t worry, this ain’t the typical Austin music awards, and these are definitely NOT typical live performance videos. Instead, we like to look at them as Porn for the Austin Music Geek.

This Saturday, Austin Electro-Funk Jam Master neiliyo drops his new album “Game Night” and he was kind enough to let us have a first listen.

A concept album, the EP takes us through a night we’ve all experienced: It’s been a long week. You don’t want to go out, so you invite a few friends over to play some board games. Dressed in neon colors, peg-legged acid wash jeans and deck shoes, you’re ready for a night of inside jokes and casual conversation.  The night starts off simple enough, but after a frisky game of spin the bottle (3 guys, 2 girls), it devolves into a randy round of musical chairs.

Combining grinding electro with house and funk synth lines and 90’s Miami booty bass beats, this album is straight up future. neiliyo’s flow on the album puts Prince to shame. And there’s an underlying dirty, slow jam feel to it. It’s kinda like Underworld, Salt-N-Peppa (from the “Push It” years), Jodeci, Jimmy Jam and Tom Jones got together to make a relief album to bail out Parker Brothers.

A couple of weeks ago, we met up with neiliyo (and 15 of his fans) at the Lamar Street Pede Bridge to make a performance video for the Roaries. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow night to see that. For now, content yourself with neiliyo and crew teaching us how to hip hopscotch.
