The best part of waking up should be something much better than Folger’s in your cup.  Swap it out for fair trade coffee!  You can find the fairest bean in town at Fair Bean Coffee on South First Street.  Fair Bean aims to offer Austinites the best quality of coffee from around the world at a fair price.  The Fair Bean crew even roasts green coffee beans in small batches right in the shop!  .

So why do we want fair trade coffee over a cheaper Folgers or specialty coffee?  First off, you’re stickin’ it to the man.  The consumer cuts out the corporate middle man by offering most of the profit directly to the coffee farmer.  Fair trade coffee farmers don’t have to resort to other means of income like cattle raising (a huge cause of land erosion and deforestation).  If the farmer is earning decent wages for their hard labor (and trust me, it’s HARD!) then they are more likely to produce sustainable, quality coffee.  That is to say, your beans won’t have chemicals and pesticides and you’d be supporting sustainable environmental practices.  In short, purchasing fair trade coffee means you’re supporting humane work environments for coffee workers, fair wages, sustainable environmental practices and a better quality of bean for yourself.

Fair Bean Coffee has built enduring relationships with coffee farms and co-ops around the world ensuring many farmers receive a steady and reliable income.  At Fair Bean Coffee you know your coffee is coming from a place that observes ecological responsibility.   Yumminess!

I remember discussing coffee farming with my good friend and mentor, Humberto Zuniga.  After over 30 years in the business, the coffee crisis of ‘01 caused him to cut his losses and move on to other crops.  He explained that he was taking the time to grow his coffee organically, but the consumer wasn’t willing to pay a little more for his organic and sustainable methods.  He had to think of new ways to support his family.

Andres Salvador (owner/founder of Fair Bean Coffee) aims to bridge the gap between responsible consumers and producers.  He helps farmers like Humberto get connected with caring consumers, like YOU!  I’m asking you to only buy fair trade coffee from here on in.  It only costs about $2 more per pound, but is definitely worth it.  Did I mention that it’s delicious!?

Go pay Andres and crew a visit on S. 1st or inside RunTex off of Riverside!

Don’t soft sell the taste difference. I make freshly ground coffee for myself every morning, and Fair Bean has the best beans I have found in the city.

I have tried many others (whole foods, central market, austin java, katz, ruta maya, & more), but theirs are hands down superior. The cost is in line with other premium beans, and well worth it. Try the Brazilian, it is incredible.

(and no, I am not affiliated with them in any way, they just have a great product)
