Does your sex life mirror your spending habits?

2010 May 24

There’ve been several articles published during this Great Recession that say our sex drive drops when money is tight.  I guess financial stress makes people less interested in being intimate.  But does this phenomenon go beyond just recessionary habits?  Do our sex lives mirror our financial lives?  Let’s take a look at some typical spending habits and see!

The Spendthrift:

This person buys everything she wants even if she can’t afford it.  Credit card bills pile up and this person doesn’t cut back on spending.  Her sex life is the same.  She has sex with multiple partners and doesn’t have any interest in settling down with one person.  If she is in a relationship, she may not be fully vested in it.

The Compulsive Saver:

He saves all his money, and he is always on the lookout for a good deal.  Cheaper is better!  He is very cautious about his spending, and this cautionary behavior bleeds over to his love life.  Sex is something he hasn’t seen in a while because he doesn’t take much risk in meeting people.  The Compulsive Saver in a relationship may be withdrawn from his partner especially if she has a different view of money than he does.

The Conscientious Consumer:

She has a wisdom about money and does a good job at evaluating purchases.  She will spend money on things that are important to her while living within her means.  The single conscientious consumer is actively looking for a relationship and is ready to settle down.  In a relationship, she will be supportive and nurturing.

Um, no. My husband and I are, well, active–and we still tend to save money (or at least not spend everything we have). Strange analogies; hyperbole, perhaps?

Thanks for the comment. It sounds like you and your husband have a healthy balance. The more important thing for your financial life…and your sex life, is that it seems like you two are on the same page about both. Congrats!
