By this time last year, we’d already posted 40 RSVPs to SXSW. This year, we haven’t posted any. That’s not to say there aren’t any parties–in fact, it’s quite the opposite: there are too many. Since New Years, I’ve been getting hundreds of emails a day from parties and bands playing at SXSW. And since I’ve been off-and-on sick, culling through all those emails seems like such an insurmountable task.

When I make my party recommendations, first I look through my emails. Then I crosscheck with friends’ spreadsheets to make sure my RSVP links, dates and information are all accurate. After that, I choose the most popular events from those spreadsheets and toss in a few of the cooler, smaller parties to make the SXSW RSVP list that we share with y’all. By narrowing it down from 400 to 150, it keeps you guys from getting overwhelmed.

SXSHHH: The Organized Way to Party SXSW

Out of all the spreadsheets I reference, the most extensive and organized is curated by @wornwhite and @jaycampbell. Achieving an almost legendary status by folks who want to maximize their SXSW party experience, their spreadsheet has traditionally been hosted on Google Docs. This year, however, they’ve dropped a little dime and created SXSHHH.

The guys let me play around with the site. It’s a massive leap from the Google Doc from the last couple years. Check it:

The site contains free events and parties from both SXSWi and SXSW Music. Each listing has a link to the RSVP and a description of the event, including call outs for free booze or food. You can sort by date, venue, or band. New events are listed in red. And you can add the events you want to attend to a virtual schedule.

Of course, all this organization comes at a price. To help alleviate the costs of hiring a web developer to create the site, the guys are asking for $5. Considering that’s the price of a beer, I think it’s worth it.

RSVPSTER: The Lazy Man’s SXSW

Do you like to party but HATE having to fill out all those dreadful RSVPs? Well, for $30, the enterprising folks at RSVPster will RSVP you and a +1. They’ll even throw in a full schedule to help guide you through your bacchanalian adventure. I’m recommending this option to my clients and my friends from out of town. Just be sure to sign up early. Once the RSVPs close, they close.

Not exactly sure where they are getting their party list from, but the site looks nice.

ACL Festival 2011 kicks off in a few hours. It’s down to the wire. Are you ready?

Ride your damn bike to ACL

There’s ZERO parking at ACL–unless you have a bicycle. There’s more bike parking than the eye can imagine–but still it can get a little hairy. Bring a bike lock, cause you might have to get creative and park in a tree. Bike repairs are available onsite. Do it! It will save you time on the way home, tho!

Ditch the j, go the dugout way

There’s a voluntary smoking ban at Zilker Park this year. But a concert without a little green is like peanut butter with no jelly, beans with no rice, kid with no play. So for those of you who want to puff the magic dragon, ditch the j and bring a dugout. Don’t be the stoner who sparked the wrong kinda grass and burned down ACL. Alternatively: Get a porta-vape.

One water for every two…or four beers

For those of you who prefer the other Bud, just remember to drink some water. Empty liquid containers and CamelBak’s are allowed in the park, and the folks at ACL have amped up the watering stations. Not only is it hot out, but you don’t wanna be this drunk-ass dude and end up on YouTube, do you?

If you didn’t take mushrooms, you may have heat stroke.

ACL Cares, and they want you to know the warning signs of heat stroke:

Heat stroke can be identified by excessive thirst, lack of urination, headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, disorientation, agitation, flushed or hot skin, loss of consciousness or seizure.

So if you or a friend didn’t take peyote, mescaline, mushrooms, ecstasy (or whatever the young folks ingest to get high), and your experience any of the above signs, visit the Medical tent.

Detox before you retox

This year, ACL is more than just the festival. With a slew of unofficial ACL Fest parties, this year might be a bit of a marathon–especially for your liver, kidneys, and immune system. Do your body a favor and get some vitamins. I recommend hitting up Juiceland (formerly known as Daily Juice) on Barton Springs or Lake Austin Blvd on your way into the park. You can also save some dough and make them at home.

A couple of years ago, we thought that the number of unsanctioned afterparties during ACL Fest weekend would reach SXSW proportions. This year, with more than a dozen free and unsanctioned parties, we think we’re almost there. 7. Echotone Remix – A Louder Night for A Louder Fight

Y’all know how much we love the Austin documentary Echotone. To kickoff their run at the Drafthouse, the guys are throwing a full-on remix party–and it’s free! Check it:

ECHOTONE REMIX is exactly what it sounds like. A remix of the sights, sounds, and delivery of this incredible movie. Three teams made of VJs and DJs will each throw down their interpretation of the film in order to get the body moving for the cause the movie champions – MUSIC!

Each team will take footage and music from the film and add new twists and sounds. The results will be a mixture of live and prerecorded video and sound remixing that will be projected onto the 25 ft high screen of the newly reopened ND Studios. The end result will be a night of sweaty dance goodness celebrating Austin, Echotone and of the artists.

6. Deep Eddy Vodka Garden

Locally-made sweet tea vodka Deep Eddy Vodka hosts a 3-day party with free booze and free bands. Since it’s right outside of the festival, it’s close enough to get shit-faced and cool off while Coldplay or another mainstream band plays the main stage. It’s also free if you like Deep Eddy Vodka on Facebook.

5. Art Disaster 13

Now an Austin institution, the Art Disaster parties combine some of the best local DJs with a kick-a line-up. I’ll let the Art Disaster folks do the talking:

4. GayCL

A free event at our favorite East Side venue, Cheer Up Charlie’s, features Austin bands Follow That Bird, Rickey Jean Francois, Boy Friend, Kay Leotard, Agent Ribbons, The Great Aware. It’s also a fundraiser for Equality Texas.

3. Silverton Partners presents…METRO AREA & LEARNING SECRETS

Man, throughout the early 2000s, Metro Area was the effing jam. With super chic, stylish house, Metro Area‘s joints could always get any club or party jumping. They’re one of the bands I’ve always wanted to see, and now thanks to Learning Secrets, it’s happening. For a taste, check out this their classic, Miura:

Opening for Metro Area is Houston’s Indian Jewelry. From psychedelic, experimental to driving electro, these guys echo early 80s electronic pioneers Suicide or Throbbing Gristle. And Austin’s Ricky Jean Francois is nothing but pure bliss.

What’s most amazing to me is that, thanks to Austin venture capital firm Silverton Partners and Austin’s Lamebook, this party is $5 with an RSVP. I’d RSVP and get there early. Beauty Bar is small, and it’s probably gonna fill up really quickly.

2. Silent City Limits

The Enchanted Forest is probably one of my most beloved music venues. As the name suggests, it’s a magical world where art meets nature–and it’s right in the city. Due to noise violations, the Enchanted Forest was almost shut down forever. Then lo came the silent dance party. Instead of loud speakers blasting music, each participant wears a set of headphones. DJ sets are wireless transmitted, giving the crowd both a personal and communal experience. I missed the ACL party, but I don’t plan on missing this one–especially since it’s just a few blocks from my house.

Ok, outside of Fun Fun Fun Fest, this may be the best damn line-up this year. Held at 5 different venues all day on Saturday, Ditch the Fest Fest gets you more than 75 bands for a $5 wristband–this ish is legit. Dayum, Lucy the Poodle has pulled out all the stops. And now, most of the proceeds are going to help victoms of the wildfires.

This weekend, Austin’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Community celebrates Gay Pride. After last year’s somewhat contentious split between corporate/commercial and homegrown/queer, this year’s Pride takes the emphasis of the event and refocuses on the diversity of the community.

At first, moving Pride out of the nationally recognized month of June and into September seemed like a bad idea. But after the bitch azz heat of this last summer, I’m kind of glad–especially since, due to permitting issues, the Pride Parade will be during the day. Another change: The Pride Festival is back to its old home in Fiesta Gardens.

The Pride Festival is also home to the biggest change, for me.  With the booking of less mainstream and gay stereotyped groups, this year’s official celebration offers a more ethnically and musically diverse line-up that includes plenty of electro, bounce and hip hop. In fact, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m kinda excited about several acts.

Here’s a little rundown of some of my faves (in no particular order):

Leslie & the LYs

You may not know electro band Leslie & the LYs, but you’ve probably seen front woman Leslie Hall’s Cheesy Sweater photo series. Musically, she reminds me of beautiful electroclash of the 2000s with elements of 90s house and hip hop. Lyrically, the songs are playful and tongue-in-cheek. Danceable and fun, I hear she puts on a great show!

Yo Majesty

With elements of hip hop, electrohouse, dancehall and crunk, Yo Majesty will bring the funk to Austin Pride. Although from America, this Lesbian crew works with UK producers, including Basement Jaxx and HardfeelingsUK, Break sexual stereotypes and musical stereotypes, they’ve toured with electro star Peaches–and with songs like “Twerk” “Booty Klap” and “Cherry Pop”, their music is equally sexual. Fans of Thunderheist or Miami bass will love this group.

Oaktown’s 3.5.7.

Um, this legendary old school hip hop rap group Oaktown’s 3.5.7. is phenomenal. Produced by MC Hammer back in the DIZZAY, the girls are reuniting for the first time since 1989. If you like Salt-n-Peppa and JJ Fadd, you’ll love this band. But then again, if you like those groups, you prob already know this, man.

Katey Red

Big Freedia’s right-hand queen, Katey Red brings that Nawlins “Sissy” Bounce to Austin’s Gay Pride. If you’ve been to a High School dance in the south since the mid-90s or are a modern day hipster, you probably already know how much azz gets thrown around in this style of hip hop. And with her sophisticated sytle, this is one diva that will not disappoint. Bahleeb dat.

ejector

San Francisco’s ejector bring a moody, dark vibe to Austin Pride. Sometimes walking the line between electro, goth and industrial, these guys combine the smokiness of an underground club in SF with the euro ambiance of a Berlin diskotech. But don’t let the darkness scare you: Fans of Pet Shop Boys and Erasure will love them, too.  And there’s a good chance at least one of these dudes will have the electro otters swooning.

Whether straight, gay, bi, try, queer, trans, poly, or whatever, come celebrate the diversity of Austin’s community at Austin Pride Festival 2011.
