“Candy-Coated World: An Interview With Austin Photographer Cory Ryan”
Multi-colored gumballs in a machine. Rainbows of rock candy on a stick. Kool-Aid. These are the things I think of when I see Cory Ryan‘s photography–except she’s photographing abandoned gas stations, old street signs and Austin landmarks. Most folks would wash those subjects in a sepia tone to remind you of some sort of rustic days gone by. Not Cory. Like her personality, her world is bright, vibrant and colorful. And you can catch it all TODAY at Austin Art Garage from 7-9P.
I first met Cory at the South Side Sanctuary Party over the summer. Wearing a bright red, kinda 1940′s looking dress, she totally stood out amongst the throngs of black-denim-and-white-shirt hipster kids. Her boyfriend, Tom, was also rockin a 1940′s Cowboy shirt in a bright blue. Not only were they super effing cute, but they radiated such good energy that I had to snap a picture. Since meeting them that night, Cory and Tom have become some of my favorite people in this city, and I officially nominate them for Austin’s Cutest Couple.
In the show “Heads & Holgas,” Cory teams up with friend Hope Perkins to present a candy-coated world. In addition to Cory’s multi-colored prints, you’ll find Hope’s brightly painted, neon kitsch mounted animal heads and masks. Hope also has some plastic paintings of half-animal half-human creatures in semi-erotic poses that are destined to be the velvet painting of the future
WATCH: In the video, below, Cory tells Chris a little more about the show. She also tells us what it’s like to shoot on a Holga, the $12 Chinese Toy Camera that she used in the show.
