“Austinites’ Fun Fun Fun Fest Picks: Richard Gonzalez from Austin Music BlogUltra8201″
Fun Fun Fun Fest is like Austin’s little secret music festival. Everything is bigger in Texas, so a “little” music festival still means it needs a roadmap and a hand guide. With 2 days and 4 stages, Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 still can be overwhelming, esp if you like hip-hop, indie, punk and comedy. We’ve asked some of our favorite peeps in Austin to help interpret the line-up by sharing their Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Picks!

Ultra8201's Richard Gonzalez with the lovely Jenifer DeVito from The Peen Scene.
I’m gonna be honest: I don’t know a lot about Ultra8201‘s Richard Gonzalez. I see him at pretty much every party and every event, but I never have a chance to talk to him before things get crunk. From afar, he reminds me of the cat that sits back and takes it all in: the lights, the music, the people. I guess it’s THAT quality that produces a slew of concert photographs and a history for throwing great social events.
If you’ve never seen Richard’s concert photography, check out his blog Ultra8201. In addition to photos, you’ll also find new music downloads from local and national indie acts, Austin event listings and concert reviews. He also throws some pretty pimp parties, like Friday’s Fun Fun Fun Fest launch party The Combo Plate.
Here’s what Richard has to say about Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009. Scroll down to see his Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 picks, including times and stages.
RoA: What band are you looking forward to seeing most, and why?
RG: DEATH and Danzig are the most appealing at the moment. GZA doing Liquid Swords is a big deal even though I have seen it already. We just saw Of Montreal a few months ago and they blew us away, will definitely be checking them out. Too many! Neon Indian, Les Savy Fav, Harlem, The Laughing, Brian Posehn, Pharcyde, Kid Sister, Yeasayer. we could go on and on….
RoA: What’s your fondest FFFF memory?
RG: Being in the photo pit during The National last year was definitely a highlight. And some point we stopped shooting pictures and just stood there in awe. They also have a port of potty directly behind the main stage. It’s funny because you go in there to use it and the mesh is eye level with the stage. It’s funny going in there and being eye level with the crowd and your standing behind a band performing while your peeing. Really hope they set it up that way again this year. It hilarious!
RoA: Anything else to say abt FFF?
RG: Get there early and see the early bands. You never know who is going to break out. It’s never a bad idea to see a band with the word Fuck in it and this year I hope everyone goes out and sees Bankrupt and the Borrowers. They lost a member a few weeks ago and are playing this show as a farewell to him. The comedy on the line up is a breath of fresh air. The festival does it right and they book great comics. It’s like they find the “indie” comics which is kinda impressive.
