“Austinites’ Fun Fun Fun Fest Picks: Austin’s Dangerous All-Star DJ Orion”

2009 November 6

Fun Fun Fun Fest is like Austin’s little secret music festival. Everything is bigger in Texas, so a “little” music festival still means it needs a roadmap and a hand guide.  With 2 days and 4 stages, Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 still can be overwhelming, esp if you like hip-hop, indie, punk and comedy.  We’ve asked some of our favorite peeps in Austin to help interpret the line-up by sharing their Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Picks!

DJ culture is something you either get or you don’t. It’s not just about throwing on records, it’s a science. Growing up on hip hop and house music, I’ve always been a fan of a bomb DJ, but my idea of what a “bomb” DJ is has changed over the years.

As a young house head, I wanted a DJ who could take me on a journey. With hip hop, I wanted a turntablist who could scratch and mix while still keeping the crowd bumpin. As my musical palette has matured, I want a DJ who can do all of the above AND surprise me. Austin’s DJ Orion does just that.

In the vein of greats like Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash, Orion can go from hip hop into some crazy South American ish to punk and then drop some obscure sci-fi soundtrack on top of that without even flinching–so who better to give us their picks for a festival that celebrates punk, indie and hip hop, right?!

You can see Orion at FFFFest on the Blue Stage on Sunday at 12.15P with the Peligrosa All-Stars, a DJ supergroup droppin cumbia colombiana, reggaeton, salsa and other latin vibes. TONIGHT, Friday, November 6th, at Creekside he’s also bringing you Crooked A: A Live Mixtape featuring some of my favorite Austin MC’s like Lady Legacy, Dubbsicks, Yadira Brown, stormshadow and more.

Here’s what Orion has to say about Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009. Scroll down to see his Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 picks, including times and stages.

RoA: What band are you looking forward to seeing most, and why?

O: I’m looking forward to playing. I love all these bands but I love performing more. If I had to pick though I’d say Face to Face. It takes me back to rollerblading and sneaking into my high-school girlfriends room, late at night. I also helped curate The Dj Melee performance between Prince Klassen, King Louie and the Freakin Puerto Rican that performs right after Peligrosa. I’m pretty much taking over the Blue stage on Sunday, bet you didn’t know that!

RoA: What’s your fondest FFFF memory?

O: I went last year but only for a second to pick something up from someone. I got to catch Manny and Bigface kill it, early as hell. It still hurts.

RoA: Any other commentary abt the show/line-up or the addition of the comedy stage

O: That’s not funny. JK. Seriously though FFF did a great job, they started w/ 4 genres and added Latin music and comedy (Kuduro too if you include Buraka Som Sistema). Best fest in the city. It’s going against the grain of my lifestyle to get up early but I’ll do it for transmission!
