OPENING: Exploded Records to Serve Austin’s Electronic Music Community

Exploded Records Austin Juiceland

It’s been almost 10 years since Alien Records, Austin’s original dance and electronic music store, closed. A hub of the 90s rave scene, Alien used to be housed on 5th St where Black Swan Yoga currently is. Since then, Austin hasn’t had anywhere devoted to beats of a different kind. That all changes this week!

With the opening of Exploded Records this Friday, Austin will finally have a store to serve the electronic music community. Located in Juiceland at 45th and Duvall, Exploded Records is a partnership between Andrew Brown (aka soundfounder) and Juiceland’s owner Matt Shook.

Named after the popular underground monthly beathead event Exploded Drawing, Exploded Records will offer new releases from electronic, hip hop, and local record labels. They’ll also carry a substantial amount of quality used records from all genres.

When asked about why he decided to open Exploded Records, Andrew had this to say:

“There are a lot of really great record stores in Austin that I go to all the time. I love End of an Ear and Friends of Sounds. But a lot of places don’t have a focused section for a lot of the good new electronic music coming out. We’re gonna focus on creative electronic music

“The thing that really fascinates me about electronic music and beat music–hip hop–is that it’s kind of a culmination of everything. Through sampling and remixing, you can hear a song that has elements from blues, funk, soul, rap, country, afrobeat. Everything becomes this melting pot because electronic musicians can take pieces of everything and flip it into something they call their own. By covering all this beat music and having a wide variety of good used records of other music of all genres makes sense to sell to beat makers.”

The store wants to become a hub for Austin’s electronic scene. On Fridays, they plan on inviting local and touring artists to DJ in the store and rock the ones and twos. They hope to record the sets and release them as podcasts.

This Friday starting at 2PM, join Exploded Records for a grand opening party of epic proportions. Featuring some of Austin’s top beathead and electronic DJs, you won’t want to miss it.

We love Andrew’s work as soundfounder and everything he does with Exploded Drawing. We’re sure this will be a huge success!

Backspin was the dance music record store of Austin after the black hole of progressive house/trance record store alien records shut down.
