OMG! New Austin Bike Map for 2010! Finally!

January 25, 2010

Screen shot of new Austin Bike Map for 2010If you don’t follow my personal account on Twitter, you may not know that I moved last week. Yup, after living most of my adult life off of South Congress (except when I moved to NYC, Berlin and SF), I decided to spread my wings. It’s a little scary, but I’m going to love living off the Greenbelt.

Part of moving means having to find new routes to work, downtown, your favorite club, whatever. As a cyclist, it’s even more crucial to find the safest, fastest way. Thank goodness the city has been building new bike lanes and trails. The problem is, however, that the bike maps are still stuck in early 2007. At least, that’s what you get if you use Google and go to the city’s page for the map.

To be honest, I was on the verge of writing a letter, until I poked around the website enough to find a new map dated December 14th, 2009. Yup! A brand spanking new map for you to download. Read it and bike, suckas!

The date on the map says it is from 2008, which is better than what is posted on the city’s bicycle site, but not up to date.

This one doesn’t show many new (built before 2008) roads in SW Austin, so I assume it isn’t really updated.

Hi Scooby. When comparing it to the old map, it does have updated trails and lanes around Downtown. You are right about the date tho.

Map link is dead. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/publicworks/downloads/bikemap-121409.pdf is now “404″. I have no suggestion for fixing the link. I searched there for “bikemap” and found that their own links are dead as well. I am intrigued that this map is so sensitive, it must be kept from the public. ;-)
